Kingfish

Having spent 30 years targeting kingfish professionally, I discovered that different baits are effective at various times. Often, small cuttlefish and squid (dead) would outperform live bait for smaller fish in shallow waters, but a week later, live bait would become more effective. It's essential to cover all your bases with kingfish bait. Sometimes, jigging would be more successful than bait, but consistently, live bait was the best method for catching kingfish. Larger fish tend to be in the shallows during summer and move to deeper waters in winter. To increase your chances of catching larger kingfish, try using live bait such as yellowtail, jack mackerel, slimy mackerel, salmon, or squid. Aim to fish up-current from an underwater structure. Typically, the stronger the current, the more kingfish will congregate.
